Sixth Grade Newsletter
February 3, 2012

Children now need coats, hats, mittens or gloves.  Students who do not come to school with boots will have to stay on the hot topped portion of the playground.

Classroom Information
Very few gemstone projects still have to be presented.  We are now looking at how metals are mined, smelted and combined to make alloys.  Students have learned how minerals are used in our world from buildings, to glass, to pottery.  We are just about finished with our study of ancient Egypt.  We will soon be studying ancient India.

Math facts are weak for many of our sixth graders.  Multiplying every card in a deck of playing cards by a number is a good place to start.  Spelling needs to be practiced out loud each day.  That is the only way they will be remembered over time.  Students should all be reading 10 pages every night.  Sometimes children need to finish some work for homework, too.  Your child should be doing some school related work every day at home.

Some children who need more time to finish work may make arrangements to stay after school on Mondays and/or Thursdays.  Students will need transportation home and a note from you stating that they have permission to remain after school.  Mrs. Poirier is available before school in the morning on Monday through Thursday, too.  This is to be looked upon as an opportunity and not as punishment.

Hearts Alive!
Blueberries top the list as one of the most powerful disease-fighting foods.  That's because they contain anthocyanins, the antioxidant responsible for their dark blue color.  These delicious jewels are packed with fiber, vitamin C, and are available all year long.  Boost heart health by adding them into your diet regularly.  Here's how:
1.  Top your whole-grain cereal with fresh or frozen blueberries to add delicious flavor, a dose of fiber, and heart-healthy antioxidants.
2.  Power up pancakes, waffles, or muffins with fresh, frozen, or dried blueberries for a nutritious breakfast.
3.  Eat them plain or mix with other fruit for a low-calorie, high-fiber tasty fruit salad, dessert, or snack.
