ESSENTIAL MATHEMATICS SKILLS

FOR IN-COMING KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

Department: Mathematics

Parents of pre-schoolers often wonder, "Is my child ready for school?" According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (1997), "There is no one quality or skill that children need to do well in school÷a combination of factors contribute to school success." Listed among these factors are "physical well being" and "social and emotional maturity"; however, there are some mathematics skills that make the transition from home to school easier for children. The following document delineates some of these skills and serves as a guide to parents and teachers assessing the readiness of a child for kindergarten.
