"Raising a Writer"

Tips from the National Association for the Education of Young Children:

Foster your child's awareness of print and how we use it. Here are ways you can help:

1. Print your child's name on his/her lunch box and other belongings while they watch.

2. Talk about everyday print. ("Let's go here. The sign says "Pizza Parlor".)

3. Point out letters and words and encourage your child to find them in books and all around.

4. Challenge your child to be a print detective.

5. Provide magnetic or plastic letter tiles for children's play.
6. When children are playing house, store, hospital, or other pretend activities, give them writing supplies and occasionally plant a writing idea.
7. Encourage children to read menus, weather reports, and other useful print, and to write letters, cards, lists and messages.
8. Write notes for kids to read. Maybe create a message board for you and your child to write to each other.

9. Show children how and what you write as part of your job.

10. Start a family journal recording special days, funny happenings, and big events.
11. Maintain a family news board where anyone can write headlines and updates ("George won the checkers game last night").
12. Involve your kids in planning a vacation or outing. Together you can look at maps, brochures, web sites. Children can also make a list of what they will take with them.
