/ Guidance Counseling Services

Dear K-3 Parents,

Welcome to a new school year!

My name is Fred Andrews. I am the school counselor based at Piscataquis Community Middle School in SAD#4. This school year I will be available to work with students, teachers & parents at the K-3 level. My goal is to help insure that each student is able to maximize his/her potential for success at school.

By working together, I feel that we have the best opportunity to help students:

            -  Better understand and develop their     inner strengths.

            -  Increase their interpersonal communication skills.

            - Build healthy relationships.

            - Develop strategies that support emotional health

           - Overcome obstacles to academic, personal, & social success.

I will be visiting the elementary schools on a regular basis, and am available for parent consultations by appointment. To get in touch with me at PCMS, you can call 876-4301 or e-mail me at:  fandrews@sad4.com.  Have a great year!

/ McKusick and GPS Schedules

McKusick and Guilford Primary students are now on a Monday through Friday schedule.  They are no longer on a 6 day schedule.  Your child’s teacher will let you know which day is the scheduled day for Music, Movement, and Art.

/ Notice!!!

Dismissal for children being picked up at McKusick is 2:35p.m. Students being picked up by parents/guardians will not be dismissed from the Multipurpose Room until early buses have loaded and left. The sign out sheet for students is on the front table.   Thanks for keeping confusion out of the hallways. This will also help to keep traffic to a minimum at dismissal. Please remember that passing a bus with blinking red lights is a violation of the law. Thanks for you help with this.

/ OPEN HOUSE

Open house will take place at the C.L. McKusick School and Guilford Primary School on Thursday September 13th from 5:30-6:30.  Come and meet your child’s teacher and see their classroom.  All are welcome.

/ Emergency Cards

Please remember to return your child’s emergency card as soon as possible.  We will continue the call back system.  If your child is going to be either tardy or absent, please call the school by 8:00 AM.  If you do not call us, we must spend time trying to find you!

/ Book Fairs at GPS & MCK Elementary Schools

A book fair will be held at both of the elementary schools this year from Sep 10-14 2007. This will be the only book fair held this school year. Your children will be able to visit the fair during the regular school day. You may send in checks made out to your child’s school (GPS or MCK School) and we will send home the change. MCK Students will visit the book fair on the following days:  Monday-Quimby, Tuesday-Herrick & Kelly, Wednesday-Pulkkinen, Thursday-Cookson. GPS 2nd graders can visit during the 10:00 recess and 3rd graders can visit during the lunch recess.

All books for the book fairs this year were selected by Mrs. Jordan, Mrs. Violette and Mrs. Cleary, the manager of Mr. Paperback Books located in Dover-Foxcroft; in hopes of offering a better quality of books for our students at an inexpensive cost.

For more info call: Nancy Jordan, GPS at 876-4590 or Charlotte Violette  MCK at 876-2656.

/ HUGS

The SAD #4 parent group, HUGS (Having United Goals), will be having their first meeting on Monday, Sept. 10th at 6:00 at the McKusick School. All parents are encouraged to come and meet other parents.

/ Transportation

Please keep this newsletter in a safe place during the school year.  It contains important information for parents to help the school year run smoothly.

/ SUPPER WITH A SIDE OF READING

An after school literacy program is now being offered to all GPS, MCK and Head start students and their families. The program is called “Supper With A Side Of Reading” and will be held once a month at the McKusick Elementary School Multipurpose Room. The program will be able to accommodate 40 families. The program will include supper, a family workshop and a family book checkout. The first program will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2007. This is a FREE program for our students and their families. For more info please see the flyer sent home or contact Charlotte Violette at 876-4590 or 876-2656.

/ News From Food Services

The forms for free or reduced lunch need to be returned by all students whether you qualify or not.  If you do not qualify, just write NO on the application, sign and return.  Please put lunch and milk money in an envelope labeled with your child’s name, amount enclosed, and what your child needs for the week.  If your child is absent, the overpayment will be applied to next week’s lunches.

Lunch money and money for any other thing may not be combined in one check.  If you pay for your child’s lunch/milk with a check, that check must be for the school lunch program only (payable to S.A.D. #4).  Thank you for your cooperation.  SAD #4 offers breakfast to all K-12 students at no charge.

/ SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGNUP MONTH

All students enrolled in the SAD 4 school district can receive their very own library card free from the Guilford Memorial Library. A parent needs only to take their child to the library to sign them up to receive this card. The card allows the full benefits of the library to include checking out books and videos. Why not take your child down during September to open up the world through books!

/ Medical Forms

When medication is needed, parents must sign a pink permission slip, which can be obtained at school.  All medication must be sent to school in its original container, which is labeled with name, contents, and directions.

/ Nutritional Information

Nutrition education benefits children today and on into their future.  It lays the groundwork for lifelong health habits, the knowledge and skills that children acquire at an early age help them choose more nutritious foods during childhood and adulthood.  Nutrition and learning go hand –in- hand.  It is easier for children to focus and learn when their nutritional needs are met.  Higher test scores, better attendance, and class behavior are only a few of the benefits.

A nutritious diet is based on five food groups:  grains, veggies, fruits, milk, meat, and beans.  They get 40-plus nutrients they need for growth and good health by eating foods from all five-food groups every day.  Eating a variety from each group helps provide a great amount of nutrients.

Your child needs 5 servings from the grains group, 4 from the veggies, 3 from the fruits, 3 from the milk, 2 servings from the meat and beans group.  Labels give serving sizes, they are a good guide for portions.

I would like to have your children try hot lunch, we serve very nutritional meals, and a nice variety.  It’s good for them to try new things.  Next month look for other ideas under Nutrition Education!

Also a reminder to all parents, we appreciate full names, teacher’s name, along with lunch money in an envelope or plastic zip lock bag, money gets lost and very hard to identify without all of the above info.  If you want credit for lunch monies… please take note.  Thank you, Head Cook at the McKusick School.
