Children’s Book Week takes place 14 – 20 November
2005. This event can be traced back to the 1912 American Bookseller Association
Convention. E.W. Mumford, of the Penn Publishing
Company was concerned about the quality of books available for children. He
delivered a paper entitled “Juvenile Readers as an Asset.” A summary of this
paper published in the New York Times caught the attention of James West,
Director of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. West asked the Scouts librarian,
Franklin K. Mathiews to take the initiative in
directing boys in quality reading. The program has grown tremendously from these
beginnings.
Share the love of reading with your child (ren) this week, while we do the same at MCK and GPS.
Can you name the top 10 children’s best
sellers? Ask your child(ren) after their library class this week and see which of
you has the most correct answers! Answers at the end of this
newsletter.

Federal regulations state that we cannot put any
personal food items in the school kitchens.
For example, we will not be able to put ice cream in the freezer or
vegetables in the refrigerator for a celebration. We also cannot use the kitchen or utensils
from the kitchen to prepare for a celebration.
Thank you for helping us uphold these
regulations.
Because of the price of fuel this year, the
schools are going to be kept a bit cooler this year. Please make sure your child is dressed
appropriately.
When school is cancelled or delayed, please listen
for the announcement on Q106.5 first.
WDME and the television will also carry the information, but might not
have the news as quickly.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled from
3:00-6:30 pm at McKusick and Guilford Primary on Nov.
9 & 16. Information regarding
conferences has been sent home. If these
days are not convenient, please call your child’s teacher to schedule a
different appointment time. It is
important that parents and teachers meet to discuss their child’s
progress. It is our goal to meet with 100%
of our parents. Conferences should be no more than 15 minutes. If more time is needed, we will be happy to
schedule an additional meeting on another date.
The
Box Tops for Education collection box is in the lobby. Please send in all specially marked General
Mills box tops with your children. A
list of qualifying products has been sent home and can also be found at
