A Special Day at McKusick School
Friday, April 18th is a half day of school. On this day we will be celebrating spring and the coming summer by wearing Sensational Sunglasses!
Maine TV Turnoff Week at McKusick and Guilford Primary
Maine TV Turnoff Week is April 28 - May 4. The average American watches more than four hours of TV each day. Governor Baldacci and Education Commissioner J. Duke Albanese are asking students to reduce their TV viewing to only 4 hours for the entire week. Students are encouraged to carefully select TV programs and to discuss their selections with their parents. The student participation form needs to be signed by a parent and returned on Monday, May 5. Special recognition will go to schools with 50% of their students participating in TV Turnoff Week. You can look for a participation form arriving home the Monday after vacation.
Spring Cleaning?
Time for spring cleaning? Please keep us in mind when you're hoeing out. The McKusick School will be having a rummage sale on Saturday, May 17th! We'll take clothing, household items -- you name it, we'll take it! Keep watching the newsletter for further details. The proceeds will be used to purchase a die cut machine that will cur shapes to use with bulletin boards, books, manipulatives, posters, letters for signs and much, much more!! Please bring donations to the McKusick School and leave them in the multi-purpose room on the table.
Arts Alive T-Shirts
Arts Alive Day is Wednesday, May 28th. On this special day everyone will be wearing a student designed "Arts Alive" t-shirt. Students are being asked to donate $3 towards the cost of the shirt. Please send $3 in an envelope to your child's teacher by Friday, April 18. Be sure to mark the envelope with your child's name.
Help Wanted
We are looking for volunteers to help set up the K-6 art displays at PCMS on May 8. If you can help, please call Jennifer at Guilford Primary, 876-4590.
Family Connections
Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles who are raising their grandchildren, nieces and nephews: Join us for information and good company. Family Connections meet at Penquis CAP, 50 North Street in Dover on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Please call 1-800-833-9786 for more information.
Parkman Pre-School
Parkman Pre-School is currently accepting applications for the 2003-04 school year. There are only a few openings left. Students turning 4 by Oct. 15, 2003 will be given preference. Please call Mrs. Ringle or Mrs. Ames at 876-4450 for an application and/or more information.
Poison Prevention -- "Kids act fast - so do poisons!"
McKusick School observed Poison Prevention Week recently. Teachers gave their students tips on avoiding poisons children might find in their homes. Since eighty-five percent of poisonings occur in the home, please read the following:
The Northern New England Poison Center received more than 34,000 calls in 2002. Nearly half of those poisoned in Maine and Vermont were children under six years of age. Children under the age of 6 are most likely to be poisoned by:
- Medicines (38%)
- Cosmetics and personal care products (13%)
- Plants and mushrooms (10%)
- Household cleaning products (8%)
The Northern New England Poison Center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for information about: First aid for poisoning; Preventing poisoning; Medicines, plants and chemicals; and Abuse of drugs, alcohol and other substances of abuse. 1-800-222-1222
Are There Harmful Plants In or Around Your Home?
Kids and plants don't always mix. Know the plants that could harm children. Children (especially young children) tend to go after brightly colored plants and berries. Here are some to watch out for:

If anyone puts a piece of a plant in the mouth:
1. Carefully remove any pieces still in the mouth
2. Find out the name of the plant if possible.
