PLANNING AHEAD: Remember that October 7 is an early release day followed by a week of vacation.

CONGRATULATIONS: Mrs. Weymouth’s homeroom sold the most magazine subscriptions and gets to keep the dancing bear mascot! Thanks to all families who helped in this school-wide fundraiser.

MORE THANKS: To all who contributed to our Coins for Katrina fund! Our money has been added to the school-wide collection.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Students are learning about geography of both Maine and the United States. Tell your child about places in our country you’ve traveled to. How is the land different from Maine?

MATH: We are learning to read and write numbers into the millions. We also will be exploring graphs of data. Make it a family project to look in newspapers or magazines to find examples of large numbers and/or graphs of different kinds. Students are enjoying the new take-home game for this unit. Please remember to return the game the next morning so that another student has the opportunity to share it with his/her family.

LANGUAGE ARTS: Students are writing personal narratives, true stories about themselves. We will be working through the writing process steps of these pieces: brainstorming, rough draft, revising and editing, and finally publishing a clean copy free of errors.

HOMEWORK HELPER: Does your child have a designated place and time to do homework? Try setting up an “office” for him/her. Just a small table and chair with a plastic tub of supplies will make your child feel more secure about getting that work done. Keep pencils, paper, crayons, scissors, ruler, calculator, tape, glue, etc. in the tub. Then there’s no worry about finding such supplies when they are needed. Be sure the area is well lighted and that it is off limits to younger siblings. Hang papers your child is proud of above the table area. Leave him/her a note about how proud you are of his/her successes. Keep a supply of raisins or granola bars there for an energy boost! Make it a special place.
