BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES
DATE: Tuesday, December 12, 2000
WHERE: Piscataquis Community Middle School
7:00 P.M

Members Present:
William Hume - Chairman, Phyllis Watson, George Nuite, Pam Goulette, Patti Davis, Geraldine Rizzitello, Patricia Izbicki, Cynthia Fortier, Susan McAvoy and Larry Davis.

Members Absent:
Kristy Nelson, Bruce Jones, Lorna Marshall, Brad Coburn, Melissa Douglass, Conrad Rollins and Anita Kain.

Also Present:
Jim Smith, Greg Bellemare, Bruce Lindberg, Pete Myrick and Michael Cyr.

Call to Order:
The meeting was called to order by William Hume, Chairman, at 7:01 P.M.

Approval of Minutes:
A motion was made by Geraldine Rizzitello and seconded by Pam Goulette that the minutes of November 14, 2000 meeting be approved as printed.

Vote: Yes - 10 No - 0 Ab. - 0

Public Forum:

Steve Maines presented two opportunities:
1) an idea to foster greater student participation in civic affairs such as attendance / informal participation at school board committee meetings.

2) Match-up program for our students with a foreign school. This would not be a formalized affiliation with our school system.

Educational Reports
None.

1. Adjustments to Agenda
Superintendent Cyr recommended that the Board adjust the agenda by adding consideration of the extra-curricular appointment of Emmett Butts to serve as PCHS Band Director with a stipend of $1,452.

Motion made by Pam Goulette and seconded by Phyllis Watson to adjust the agenda as recommended.

2. Resignations
None acted upon

3. Extra-curricular Nomination
Motion made by Pam Goulette and seconded by Larry Davis that the board approve the following annual extra curricular appointment (one school year only):

  • Emmett Butts - PCHS Band Director

4. Create Position
Motion made by Sue McAvoy and seconded by Geraldine Rizzitello that the Board of Directors create the following position:

  • Special Ed. Ed. Tech I - ¸ time (for state agency student)

5. Administrative Reports

  • Jim Smith (Elementary Coordinator) reported on recent (11/20-21)
    2-day comprehensive inservice training and upcoming holiday season concerts.

  • PCMS Principal, Mr. Bellemare, reported the following:
    student season-of-giving project (food pantry)
    Apple project to get national coverage
    Health curriculum upgrade
    Inservice technology with Apple Corp.
    Building security improvements
    5th grade ski program

  • PCHS Principal, Mr. Lindberg, reported the following:
    Recent MEA testing
    Holiday season concert success
    Winter sports season (no swim or ski program this year)
    Inservice time spent on accreditation review

  • Pete Myrick, Adult Ed. Director, reported on:
    Spring semester program of lifelong learning opportunities Regional effort to promote community opportunities

6. Committee Report

  • B/G/T/ (Facilities Committee) report of 11/29 meeting was distributed
  • Student /Personnel Relations report of 12/6 meeting was distributed

7. Chairperson's Report
Mr. Hume informed the Board of:
1) the need to revisit the Superintendent's Search project with newspaper advertising - a January 31st deadline.

2) Guilford of Maine's recent outreach to create a community partnership on waste stream awareness and proactive efforts for a cleaner environment.

8. Superintendent's Report
Interim Superintendent Cyr referred Board members to December memo of related activities.

  • American School Board Journal feature activities "Teaching in Maine: Some Basic Demographics" a state teacher job market.
  • Mr. Dave Pratt has submitted a letter of intent to retire at the end of this school year.
  • Next Board Meeting is January 9th
  • T/B/G Committee meeting is scheduled for 12/20/00
  • Student Personnel Relations meeting scheduled for 1/2/00
  • Financial Report (audit) was distributed. This report is in draft and has yet to be verified.

9. Adjournment
Motion made by Geraldine Rizzitello and seconded by Sue MAvoy to adjourn meeting at 7:52.
