Free and Low-Cost Health And Dental Insurance For Kids and Teens in Maine

Good News! State-sponsored programs in Maine offer free or low-cost health insurance to families with uninsured children. Coverage may be available to your children even if you work part or full-time. Income eligibility guidelines are higher than they have ever been before, so children who have not been eligible in the past may now qualify for coverage. There are no copayments or deductibles under these programs.

Benefits are comprehensive and include visits to the doctor for well or sick care, immunizations, dental care, hospital services, eye glasses, prescription drugs, physical and speech therapy, mental health and substance abuse services, transportation services, and much more.

Eligibility for these programs is based on family income only. Parents can own a home or a car and their children still qualify for coverage. Income eligibility levels increase as family size increases. A chart with approximate income guidelines is provided below. All families with uninsured children are encouraged to apply, even if their monthly income exceeds that which is listed on the chart.

Family Size 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Current Monthly Income $1,374 $1,844 $2,314 $2,784 $3,254 $3,724 $4,194 $4,664

Coverage is provided as free or at a very low cost of between $5-$30 a month, depending on family size, number of children enrolled, and monthly income. The application process is very simple. If your child(ren) already has health insurance through a parent's employer for which the employer pays 50% or more of the dependent coverage or has access to coverage through the State Employees Health Insurance Program, they may not be eligible for coverage under these programs.

Please call the toll-free Help Line at 1-800-965-7476 or your regional office of the Department of Human Services for an application or for more information regarding these health insurance programs.
