Guilford to Apply for Housing Grant

Guilford homeowners may soon qualify for grants to make home improvements.  The Town of Guilford is preparing an application for a Community Development (CDBG) Housing grant.  Applications are due in March and if successful $250,000 will be available to Guilford homeowners in the form of grants to make necessary home improvements.  The types of improvements typically completed under this program include roofing, heating, septic systems, replacement windows and doors, handicap accessibility repairs, wells or other work to make the home safer and more energy efficient.  In order to qualify, residents must meet the income eligibility guidelines.  The income limit depends on the number of people in the household; for example, the limit for a family of three is $35,500.  All information on applicants and income is kept strictly confidential.  According to local officials, there is strong community support and citizen involvement in this grant program.  The Town will conduct a Public Hearing on January 31, 2007 at 6:30PM at the Guilford Fire department Meeting Room. Residents are encouraged to attend this important meeting to learn more about the program.  Strong attendance will also help to secure the grant.  If the application is successful, residents who have completed pre-applications will be contacted and the program will also be promoted using local newspapers, school newsletters and the Town website.  Further information is available by contacting the Town Office at 876-2202 or Community Development at 1-800-648-8335.
